NDIS & How It Works

Funding & Plans

Understanding your NDIS plan and funding categories helps you get the most out of your supports.

How NDIS Funding Works

Your NDIS plan includes a budget that's divided into different support categories. Each category has a specific funding amount that can only be spent on supports within that category. Your total budget is based on your individual needs, goals, and circumstances as assessed during your planning meeting.

The Three Main Support Categories

Core Supports

Helps with everyday activities, including daily personal activities, transport, consumables, and social/community participation. This is generally the most flexible funding category.

Capacity Building Supports

Helps build your skills and independence over time. This includes support coordination, improved living arrangements, life skills development, and employment supports.

Capital Supports

Funds for higher-cost assistive technology, equipment, and home or vehicle modifications. These are typically pre-approved by the NDIA.

Managing Your Plan

There are three ways to manage your NDIS funding:

Agency Managed

The NDIA pays your providers directly. You choose registered providers only.

Plan Managed

A plan manager handles payment to providers on your behalf. You can use both registered and unregistered providers.

Self Managed

You manage and pay your own providers. This gives the most flexibility but requires more administrative work.
